Hanon Exercise No. 42
About this arrangement
Hanon's heading is Extension (stretching) of the fingers in chords of the diminished seventh, in arpeggios. He asks for the first bar of each chord to be repeated 4 times and marks it a quarter note = 60 to 120.
The repeated first bar opens the hand to the shape of the chord. Keep it relaxed, then carry the same hand shape into the arpeggio, passing the thumb under without twisting the wrist.
Start with short loops.
Use the section list as a practice map. Start at 50% tempo, loop one section, then return to the full piece once the hand shape feels stable.
Choose Right or Left to focus on one hand. Wait for note checks the highlighted notes as you play them on the screen or a connected MIDI keyboard.
Before you practice.
01 What does Hanon No. 42 train?
Stretching the hand on diminished seventh chords and passing the thumb under in arpeggios.
02 How fast should I play Hanon No. 42?
Hanon's marking is a quarter note = 60 to 120. Start at 60 and raise the speed only when every note is even.
03 Why repeat the first bar 4 times?
Hanon writes it that way: the short figure sets the stretch of the chord in the hand before the full arpeggio.
