Piano chords

Start with the major and minor chords: three notes each, one hand shape. Every chord page shows the notes, plays the chord and its inversions, and gives the fingering for the three-note chords. A good first set is C, F, G and Am: the I, IV, V and vi chords of C major.

Major chords

A major triad: root, major 3rd and perfect 5th. Bright and stable.

Minor chords

A minor triad: root, minor 3rd and perfect 5th. The major chord with its middle note one key lower.

7th chords

A dominant 7th chord: a major triad plus a minor 7th. It wants to resolve, which is why it ends so many phrases.

Major 7th chords

A major 7th chord: a major triad plus a major 7th. Soft and open, common in jazz and pop ballads.

Minor 7th chords

A minor 7th chord: a minor triad plus a minor 7th. Mellow, the most common minor chord in jazz.
